Presets are an important part of any photographer’s toolkit. They’re a quick and straightforward way to make big edits across entire batches of photos, they allow you to easily try on many different looks, and they help you to establish your brand with a personalized look. That said, buying presets and preset collections can feel like a big commitment, especially when you’re just getting the hang of things. Playing with Lightroom presets that are inexpensive or even free can be a great way to start; you’ll be able to get a feel for what kind of presets you like to use, and if you find the right free presets, you’ll also be adding a great new tool to your belt.
Are Lightroom Presets Free?
Most of the time, Lightroom presets aren’t free. It makes sense when you think about it: other photography tools usually aren’t free, either, and it can take a lot of work to create a really good preset. Preset packs can cost as little as $10 or more than $100, depending on the number and quality of the presets in the pack. It’s up to you how much you want to invest in presets, but keep in mind that you typically get what you pay for, and someone who sells all of their presets extremely cheap probably isn’t putting a ton of effort into them (unless they’re severely undervaluing their time).
However, there is a way to get quality Lightroom presets for free. Those of us who make presets are almost always photographers, too, and we know what it’s like to be on the other side of the transaction. Since presets can be an investment that you end up using for years, or even your entire career, we want you to feel confident in working with the presets we’ve designed; free presets and free preset packs give you the chance to test out whether a certain style of preset is right for you without breaking the bank.
Lightroom Mobile Presets
The Lightroom Mobile app is really useful for editing photos that you primarily want to post to social media, but using it is a little different from using Lightroom on your desktop. One of the differences is that presets for Lightroom Mobile have to be of a different file type than presets for Lightroom. Fortunately, it’s just as easy to find great presets for Mobile as it is for Lightroom – just keep in mind which version of the app you’ll be using before getting your presets.
Free Embrace Preset
The free Embrace preset is extremely versatile and a great way to taste test the style of presets that I personally love most. It’s the perfect way to add a moody look to photos from any occasion, and it’s always 100% free to download. This preset is in XMP format and works for Lightroom and ACR, not Lightroom Mobile.
Mint + Teal Bundle
The free Mint + Teal bundle is the best choice for anyone who does want the option of using Lightroom Mobile. These three gorgeous presets can be used in XMP for desktop Lightroom or in DNG for the mobile version. When you sign up, we’ll deliver the presets directly to your inbox!
Although the Wild Lavender collection isn’t free, you can save 20% on presets right now when you snag two or more collections, which makes the investment even more worth it! The Wild Lavender set includes 20 presets (17 color presets and 3-grain adjustments) for $59. All of these presets are warm, bright, and perfect for any outdoor scene. You’ll see lots of brown, silver, and lilac tones in this collection, and it gives your photos a uniquely bohemian vibe.
You can also save on the Boudoir Tones collection right now, which is one of my personal favorites; which includes 37 presets for Lightroom and ACR. I use the presets in this collection for all my boudoir work. The collection is all about making skin tones of any color look perfect in photos, which makes them ideal for boudoir photography, but they can be used to give a moody feel to any type of photography. They work very well with photos taken in low/directed light or in natural light.
Everyone wants to get the most bang for their buck, including photographers and editors. These free and sale Lightroom presets allow you to access some carefully crafted looks without spending a fortune. Whether you’re totally new to presets or a seasoned professional, there’s no reason not to download these free presets and try them out with your photos; they might be just what you’ve been looking for, or they might inspire you with other editing ideas. No matter which presets you choose to work with or which version of Lightroom you’re using, you’ll be saving yourself time and making your workflow more efficient, so there’s no time like the present to get started!
