Backlight Photography: How to Shoot Against the Sun Without a Reflector
Expose for the Light (Not the Subject)
When you’re shooting directly into the sun, your camera wants to overcompensate. It sees all that brightness and tries to balance the exposure by brightening everything else, which often blows out your highlights.
That’s why I always expose for the light, meaning I meter for the brightest area in my frame – usually the edge of the sky where the sun hits the subject.
This keeps my highlights intact and lets the shadows fall naturally, creating depth, atmosphere, and that painterly, cinematic feel.
Here’s how I do it:
- Switch to Manual Mode so you have full control.
- Lower your ISO – start at ISO 100 or 200.
- Use a higher shutter speed to preserve highlights. Depending on the light, anywhere between 800–1/4000s.
- Adjust aperture for depth: I love shooting around f/2.0–f/2.8 for portraits, or f/4–f/5.6 if I want more detail in the scene.
- Set your white balance manually, usually around 5200–6000K for that warm, natural tone.
Then I bring my subject close to the edge of the light – not directly in front of the sun, but just off to the side – so the light grazes them. This keeps the background glowing while still giving their features definition.

No Reflector Needed
I let the background and atmosphere do the reflecting. If you’re shooting on sand, pavement, or even a light-colored field, the light naturally bounces back up.
If you’re in a darker area (like a forest), try having your subject stand where there’s a bit of reflected light from the ground or nearby surface – even subtle bounce can make a big difference.
This approach keeps your image looking organic and not “filled in,” which can kill that backlit magic.

My Typical Settings for Backlit Portraits
For golden hour portraits shot directly against the sun, my go-to settings usually land around:
- ISO: 100 -300
- Aperture: f/2.0 – f/2.8
- Shutter: 1/500s – 1/1000s
- White Balance: 5600K (or “Daylight”)
- Lens: 85mm or 50mm prime
And yes, I’ll often slightly underexpose – even by a full stop – to preserve every bit of highlight detail. Later in Lightroom, I lift the shadows selectively and add warmth back in using presets that protect tonal contrast.

Editing Tip
When you expose for the highlights, your RAW files might look darker straight out of camera – and that’s okay.
That’s where the magic of editing comes in. Raising shadows gently in Lightroom while keeping highlights protected gives you that radiant, cinematic depth.
This is where my Aurelia Lightfall™ and DREAMLIGHT presets come alive – designed specifically to enhance that glowing light while keeping skin tones balanced.
Final Thoughts
Shooting against the sun is all about surrendering control and learning to feel the light.
Forget the rules for a second – experiment, move your subject, tilt your lens, watch how the light shifts.
Because when you master exposing for the light, you’ll realize you don’t need to fight it… you just need to dance with it.
