Canon R5 Review
Canon R5 Review: Why This Camera is My Go-To Workhorse
You know that feeling when a camera just fits? Like it was designed with your workflow in mind? That’s exactly how I feel about the Canon R5—a camera that, even years after its release, still holds its own in a sea of newer models.
I’ve picked up the Canon R5 at a Tradeshow last year and here is my honest review.
I’ve shot with a lot of gear over the years, but the Canon R5 continues to be my go-to workhorse. Whether I’m shooting portraits, editorial work, or brand campaigns, this camera delivers. And when it comes to skin tones? The R5 absolutely nails it—one of the biggest reasons I keep reaching for it.
Let’s dive into why the Canon R5 is still one of the best mirrorless cameras for photographers.

First Impressions: Built Like a Dream
The ergonomics on this camera? Near perfect. Canon knows how to make a body that feels good in your hands, and the R5 is no exception. The deep grip, intuitive button layout, and fully articulating vari-angle touchscreen make shooting effortless—whether I’m capturing portraits in-studio or adjusting settings on the fly.
The EVF (electronic viewfinder) is crisp and lag-free, and while some photographers still prefer optical viewfinders, I love the ability to preview exposure and white balance in real-time.
Why I Love the Canon R5
If you’re considering this camera for portraits, editorial, or even commercial work, here’s why it still dominates:
1. Skin Tones Are Unmatched
This is one of the biggest reasons I stick with Canon. The R5 produces some of the most natural, true-to-life skin tones I’ve ever seen. No weird color shifts, no excessive magenta or green tints—just clean, soft, beautifully rendered skin right out of the camera.
Whether I’m shooting fair, medium, or deep skin tones, the colors feel real and organic, which means less time color-correcting in post. That’s a massive win.
2. The 45MP Sensor = INSANE Image Quality
At 45 megapixels, the R5 delivers some of the sharpest, most detailed images I’ve ever shot. The dynamic range is incredible, and I can push shadows and highlights in post without losing detail. If you love shooting wide open but still want insane clarity, this camera makes it happen.
3. Autofocus That Just Won’t Quit
Canon’s Dual Pixel AF II system is fast, accurate, and reliable—especially with eye-tracking. Whether I’m shooting boudoir, fashion, or even fast-moving subjects, it locks on and doesn’t let go.
It’s especially good at detecting and tracking faces in backlit situations or tricky lighting, which makes a huge difference for portrait work.
4. 20 FPS Silent Shooting = A Game-Changer
The 20 frames per second (FPS) electronic shutter makes it perfect for capturing candid moments, motion, and fast-paced editorial shoots. Plus, it’s silent, which is a huge plus when shooting in quiet environments.
5. Low-Light Performance That Holds Up
Shooting at ISO 3200 or even 6400? No problem. The R5 handles noise like a champ, giving me clean, usable images in dimly lit spaces—perfect for moody indoor portraits or after-dark sessions.
6. 8K Video (Even If You Don’t Need It)
Okay, let’s be honest—not everyone needs 8K video. But the fact that this camera can shoot in 8K RAW (or downsampled 4K HQ) means you’re getting some of the best video quality in the mirrorless world. If you’re like me and mainly focus on photography but dabble in video, this feature alone makes it worth it.

Who Is This Camera For?
The Canon R5 is made for photographers who demand high-resolution images, reliable autofocus, and accurate skin tones. If you shoot:
✔ Portraits & Boudoir – Stunning skin tones, insane detail
✔ Fashion & Editorial – High-resolution files perfect for print
✔ Brand Work – Crisp, pro-quality images that impress clients
✔ Weddings & Events – Silent shutter + reliable autofocus = gold
If you’re strictly an action/sports photographer, you might want to look at the Canon R3, but for nearly every other type of photography, the R5 still dominates.
Final Thoughts: Why I’m using the R5 in 2025
There’s a reason this camera hasn’t left my kit—it’s reliable, powerful, and produces some of the most beautiful images I’ve ever shot SOOC. While newer cameras may have arrived, the Canon R5 still delivers everything I need and more.
Would I still recommend it? Absolutely.
Worth the price? 100%.
Will it be my main camera for a while? No doubt.
If you’ve been on the fence about picking up an R5, consider this your sign—it’s still one of the best mirrorless cameras out there. Now, the only question is: What will you create with it? 😏
