The Art of Connection: Inside the World of Couples Boudoir Photography
Couples boudoir is more than just intimate imagery—it’s about connection, trust, and capturing a couple’s unique chemistry in a way that feels authentic. But behind every stunning, passion-filled photo is a photographer who knows how to create that magic. From breaking the ice with nervous clients to reading the nuances of a couple’s dynamic, shooting couples boudoir requires more than technical skill—it demands intuition, empathy, and a bit of Jedi-level direction.
We spoke with two talented boudoir photographers, Ayla Quellhorst and Kayla Ruiz, both experts at making couples feel comfortable in front of the camera. They shared their best-kept secrets on how to ease nerves, create natural chemistry, and direct without over-directing. Because if there’s one thing they agree on, it’s this: the best couples boudoir sessions aren’t about stiff, pre-planned poses—they’re about energy, movement, and making clients feel at home in their own skin..
Breaking the Ice: Helping Nervous Couples Feel Comfortable
Let’s be real—most couples don’t walk into a boudoir session with the confidence of seasoned models. More often than not, one partner is raring to go, while the other is wondering how they got talked into this.
Kayla’s number one tip for nervous couples? Shift the focus.
“Just remember that you have your very favorite person going through the process with you. This isn’t a typical freeze session where you’re staring at me and the camera, smiling and fake laughing. I create moments with direction for you to really connect so that I can capture your true connection.”
Ayla takes a slightly different approach—she embeds herself in the process before the camera even comes out.
“Sit in hair and makeup with your clients. No, really. Plant yourself right there like you’re part of the glam squad. Why? Because the men—yes, the ones who act all cool and collected—are usually the ones sweating bullets. Once they realize this isn’t some awkward, naked taxidermy situation, they loosen up. And when they relax, it shows in the images.”
For same sex couples, we see a similar pattern. One partner is almost always more nervous than the other, and it’s usually the one who didn’t book the session. They’re side-eyeing everything, wondering what their partner has dragged them into. But once they see we’re just here to hype them up and make them look 🔥, they settle in, and the magic happens.”

From Posing to Directing: Creating Natural Chemistry
Couples boudoir isn’t about stiff, rehearsed movements—it’s about connection. That’s why Kayla doesn’t pose—she directs.
“At the start of every session, I let them know that I don’t pose, I direct. But I keep it vague so they do what feels natural. If I want them to sit on the couch, I don’t tell them exactly how. I’ll say, ‘I want you to sit on the couch how you would at home when you’re snuggling.’ This creates comfort while also giving me a glimpse into their natural state and connection. And as the session continues, this escalates further as they become more comfortable.”
Ayla agrees that understanding a couple’s natural chemistry is key.
“Hanging out with them before the shoot lets me study their dynamic. Are they the playful, giggly type? Do they exchange sarcastic jabs like a rom-com couple? Or is one clearly the boss while the other happily follows? Once I figure that out, I can guide them into poses that actually reflect their relationship, rather than forcing something that feels unnatural.”
Her secret weapon? Demonstrating poses with her husband.
“We show them every pose, and nothing breaks the ice faster than watching us attempt sexy poses while I roll my eyes at his dad jokes. For example, there’s this pose where one person kneels in front of the other, unbuttoning their belt. It’s already pretty intimate, right? Well, every single time, my husband pretends to take a photo looking down at me, capturing my most unflattering ‘seriously?’ face. Cue my dramatic eye-roll—and the clients love it. They realize it’s okay to laugh and be themselves.”

What are your tips for dynamic poses that add movement and storytelling to couples boudoir images?
Boudoir photography thrives on movement—static posing can feel stiff, forced, and unnatural.
Kayla’s philosophy? Never stop moving.
Kayla explains her approach:
“My biggest tip is to quite literally never stop moving. Have them move and interact with each other the entire time. This creates genuine moments. I shoot really fast, and if I loved a moment, I will have them do it again so I can turn it into one of my GIFs or ‘moving pictures’ as my clients have come to call them. But I try to be quiet and just shoot the moments as they are happening. I want them to be in their own little bubble.”
“In the beginning of a session, I do a little chat where I let them know that I do not pose—I direct. But I keep it vague so that they do what feels natural to them. When I say this, I mean if I want them to sit on the couch, I don’t tell them in a specific way. I will say, ‘I want you to sit on the couch how you would at home when you’re snuggling.’ This creates comfort for them while also giving me a glimpse into their natural state and connection. And this will escalate further as the session continues and they become more comfortable.”
At the end of every session, she does what she calls her ‘curtain call.’
“I bring them to the window and shoot them under the curtain, their bodies pressed together. Then I tell them, ‘This is your time to be goofy. Do whatever you want to each other.’ More often than not, they really open up, giggle, make funny faces. It’s the best.”

Do you have a favorite pose or prompt that always creates a beautiful, intimate moment?
Ayla explains,
Oh, absolutely. We love kicking things off with a pose that’s a mix of sexy and fun—one partner straddles the other, arching their back just enough to get that beautiful connection. Then comes the real magic: we tell the partner sitting down, “Grab that booty… like you mean it.” Instantly, laughter. But we don’t stop there. Next, we hit them with, “Now, put your face in your happy place.” And without fail, they always know what that means—they bury their face right in their partner’s chest, giggling the whole way. But here’s where the real magic happens: we drop our voices, slow everything down, and say, “Eyes closed. Just breathe.” That’s when the giggles turn into soft, intimate moments—the deep breaths, the quiet smiles, the “wow, this is actually happening” realization. And if we need a quick switch from playful to straight-up smoldering? Tone of voice is everything. Light, high-pitched banter gets them laughing; low, sultry directions turn up the heat. It’s basically photography mixed with Jedi mind tricks.

Lighting for Couples Boudoir
Both photographers favor natural light, but each has their own take on its use.
Kayla shares her preference for moodier, shadow-filled lighting.
“I am a very moody photographer, so natural light with dark shadows is always my fav. But I also loveeee a good direct light as well. Putting them right in the sun spot can be so sexy!”
Meanwhile, Ayla plays with light based on the couple’s vibe.
“For most couples, I love natural light—it keeps things fluid, and I don’t have to pause to adjust a million settings while the couple is having a moment. But if we’re going full-on art piece, nothing beats dramatic, directional lighting. Think tangled limbs, deep shadows, just enough highlights to emphasize connection—it’s giving Michelangelo, but make it sexy.”

Advice for Photographers Entering the World of Couples Boudoir
Final Advice for Photographers
Kayla has one major takeaway for photographers wanting to specialize in couples boudoir:
“Just know shooting couples is hard. Because 9/10 times, you will have one partner who was dragged in there and is the most nervous, and then you’ll have a partner who booked it and is SO excited. So you have to be prepared to handle both ends of the spectrum. And HAVE FUN! It really is so much fun to be able to capture the palpable connection between two human beings. Don’t overthink it.”
Ayla echoes that sentiment:
“You’re not just taking sexy pictures; you’re managing vibes. One person in the couple is usually super excited and ready to go, while the other is questioning all their life choices. That person? That’s your mission. Get them engaged. Get them comfortable. Make them feel like this wasn’t just their partner’s idea—it’s something they’re meant to be part of.”
“And when in doubt? Just tell them, ‘If it feels awkward, it probably looks amazing.’ Works every time.”

Final Thoughts
Couples boudoir isn’t just about capturing intimacy—it’s about fostering it. The best images come from sessions where couples feel free to laugh, touch, and be unapologetically themselves. And for photographers, that means stepping in as both director and hype person, setting the stage for moments that feel as effortless as they look.
So whether you’re just starting in couples boudoir or looking to refine your approach, remember this: the best images come from the energy you bring into the room. Set the tone, make them feel safe, and the rest? That’s where the magic happens.
