How To Use HSL Sliders in Lightroom

How I Use the HSL Sliders in Lightroom to Transform My Photos

Here is a quick tutorial on how I use the HSL Sliders in Lightroom! This tool is one of the most powerful and underusedparts of the editing process—especially if you’re trying to make your presets truly shine and dial in the final mood of your photo.

Why I Use the HSL Panel

The HSL panel allows you to fine-tune the Hue, Saturation, and Luminance of individual colors in your image. I use this to tweak skin tones, enhance color harmony, or mute certain distracting colors without affecting the rest of the image. It’s like having a precision brush that lets you paint light and color exactly where you want it.

This is especially helpful when you’re editing with presets. Sometimes, depending on the lighting or environment, a preset might look almost perfect—but just needs a little help balancing out a color or skin tone. That’s where HSL comes in and saves the day.

My Process

For this tutorial, I used one of my favorite presets from my Embrace Presets collection.. It’s moody, warm, and gives you that timeless depth that so many of us crave in our images. But I always check the HSL panel after applying a preset, because even the best base still needs small adjustments based on how the photo was taken.

Here’s how I typically adjust:

  • Hue: I shift oranges and reds slightly to perfect skin tones—this helps remove any odd magenta or green undertones.
  • Saturation: I reduce the saturation of greens if they’re too vibrant, especially in outdoor photos. I want the background to complement the subject, not steal focus.
  • Luminance: I often raise the luminance of the skin tones (orange/yellow) to give the face a gentle glow, while darkening the blues or greens to bring depth to the background.

Each adjustment is subtle but intentional. The goal is never to make the image look over-processed, but rather to guide the viewer’s eye exactly where you want it to go.

Why This Matters

Using the HSL panel gives you more control over your style—and helps you stay consistent across your gallery, which is something your clients will absolutely notice. It also gives your presets room to breathe and adapt to any lighting situation without losing their signature look.

Your Turn

Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about using the HSL sliders or if you’re struggling with a certain color in your edits. I’d love to see some of your before-and-after transformations using your favorite presets (bonus points if you’re using one of mine 😉).
