What Are Lightroom Color Profiles?

If you’ve ever opened a RAW photo in Lightroom and wondered what those “Color Profiles” are doing behind the scenes or whether you can make your own , this post is for you.

With Adobe’s recent updates, Lightroom now includes Adaptive Profiles that use AI to tailor edits based on the content of your image. But what exactly are these profiles? How do they differ from presets? And can you create your own?

Let’s break it all down in simple, photographer-friendly terms.

What Are Lightroom Color Profiles?

Lightroom profiles are essentially the starting point for how your RAW photo is rendered. Before you even touch sliders like Exposure or Contrast, your selected profile sets the baseline for color, tone, and contrast.

There are several types of profiles available in Lightroom, including:

  • Adobe RAW Profiles (e.g., Adobe Color, Portrait, Vivid, Neutral)
  • Camera Matching Profiles (mimic your in-camera picture styles)
  • Creative Profiles (Artistic, Modern, Vintage)
  • Black & White Profiles

Each one gives your image a different foundational look and they’re especially powerful for RAW files.

What Makes an Adaptive Profile Different?

Unlike standard profiles, Adaptive Profiles in Lightroom are powered by Adobe’s AI. They don’t just apply a fixed look, they analyze the actual content of your photo (lighting, subject, tones) and adjust accordingly.

That means:

  • Skin tones stay more natural
  • Backgrounds get the right balance of depth and contrast
  • Lighting adapts to fit the image’s unique exposure

For example, an Adaptive Color Profile will automatically brighten faces and soften highlights in portraits, while an Adaptive B&W Profile smartly enhances contrast based on what’s in the frame.

They’re like scene-aware smart filters offering a better, more personalized starting point.

Profiles vs Presets: What’s the Difference?

It’s easy to confuse color profiles and presets, but they serve different roles in Lightroom:

FeatureProfilesPresets
Controls RAW rendering?✅ Yes❌ No
Can be stacked?❌ No✅ Yes
Affects sliders?❌ No✅ Yes
Uses AI masking?✅ (if Adaptive)✅ (if AI-based)
Editable after applying?❌ Not directly✅ Fully editable

In short: Profiles are a foundational look.
Presets are a set of editing instructions.

If you’re serious about getting the most out of your RAW files, choosing the right profile before you start editing makes a big difference.

Can You Create Your Own Adaptive Profiles?

Here’s the honest answer:
You can’t create your own true adaptive profiles like Adobe does.

Adaptive profiles are built with internal AI systems and aren’t currently user-accessible. Even preset makers and developers don’t have the tools to build custom adaptive profiles from scratch, at least not yet.

But…
You can create Adaptive Presets using Lightroom’s AI masking tools.

These presets dynamically adjust based on the subject, sky, or background of each image. Lightroom treats them as “adaptive,” even though they’re technically just presets, not profiles.

So while you can’t build your own profile from scratch, you can absolutely mimic adaptive behavior using tools already inside Lightroom.

Best Adobe Adaptive Profiles to Use

If you want to explore adaptive profiles already available, try these:

Adaptive Color Profile

  • Great for portraits and all-purpose edits
  • Adjusts tones and contrast based on lighting and subject

Adaptive B&W Profile

  • Creates dynamic black & white conversions
  • Enhances texture, shadows, and contrast intelligently

Both are available in the Profile Browser under Adobe RAW.

Final Thoughts: Start Smarter, Edit Better

While we’re not yet able to create fully custom adaptive profiles in Lightroom, knowing how they work and how to build intelligent AI-based presets is a powerful way to elevate your edits.

By combining smart profiles with adaptive masking, you’re no longer just applying a “look.”
You’re tailoring your images in a way that feels natural, intentional, and future-forward.
